Creperie des Arts

I love that Prinsep Place is only a hundred strides from my house. Its one of those rows of old conserved houses turned restobars with al fresco tables for after office dinner and drinks. On a Wednesday night, Allan, aka A, and I finally tried this small shop in the corner of Prinsep Place: a french bistro with walls covered with nets, lamps & other fishing paraphernalia.

Apparently, the owners and chef are from Brittany (a region in France with a coastline that supplies the best lobsters, crayfish & mussels to the country) which explains the indoor theme and the random word with a heart on their business card "<3reizh" (Breton for Brittany).

Although I assumed they had nice seafood dishes among the variety they offer, in contrary to the size of their shop, I ordered another local food from the region, Buckwheat Galette. Chamrousse in the cheese section of the galettes is a savoury crepe with parma ham, melted raclette cheese and sauteed diced potatoes. I read that buckwheat grows widely in Brittany and is served with an alcoholic cider in a ceramic bowl!?? It kept me wondering why they keep sending huge tea cups from the bar counter. Haha Very unusual, right? What is usual are creperies or pancake houses like this, well, in Brittany that still promote local apple ferments over commercial beers. Ciders were once the second largely consumed drink in France next to wine.

A, on the other hand, did not go with crepe but instead steak - a 200g medium rare rib eye that came with salad and potato gratin. I tried his food and boy, was the meat so TT (tasty & tender) plus the gratin dauphinois... wow! Baked potato in cheese and cream is like heaven spelled in my tongue! I will definitely order that gratin again!

I can't run out of reasons not to go back to that little french stall across POMO. I sure loved the galette, my ham & cheese!  There are more than fifty choices for the crepes alone. So, i might pick a sweet crepe or a cheesier one next time. Not to forget them famous starters. There were no escargots last Wednesday and so we skipped. And of course, a cup of cider!

Prinsep is very near, service was so warm and a list of must trys..I might come back sooner than I think I will. No wonder Creperie des Arts survived for three years sharing their traditional food even in a very tough market for their price range.
